This week, Frugal Family reporter Carolyn Cunningham scoured our local sources to come up with a free Beatles tribute concert in Hiram, two Cultural Arts Council events in nearby Douglasville, half-price Starbucks Frappucinno-blended beverages through Sunday and the opening of the North Paulding Library on Sunday:
1. Beatles Tribute Group in Hiram Saturday
Deal: THE RETURN will perform free on Saturday in Hiram. "They have so meticulously recreated the complete Beatle image on stage. The boys feature authentic vintage instruments, haircuts and custom-made clothes and boots. Their unmistakable Liverpool accents and Beatlesque antics truly bring out the charming, charismatic personas of the original four lads we all adore," according to the group's promotional material.
In being true to the original Fab Four, THE RETURN primarily performs material played by the Beatles in live concert settings—from the early cover songs they played at Liverpool's Cavern Club to Lennon-McCartney numbers performed on the last Beatles tour of America in 1966.
Sponsored by GreyStone Power and the City of Hiram, this free event will be complemented by food vendors for purchase of refreshments.
Hours: Saturday, 6 to 7 p.m., pre-concert; 7 to 9 p.m., concert.
Location: Ben Hill Strickland Sr. Memorial Park Amphitheater, 372 Oak St. off Ga. 92, Hiram.

4. Taste of Douglasville Saturday
Deal: This 19th-annual free event will include not only food but also an outdoor arts exhibition, crafts, a Kids Korner and entertainment. Sponsors of both the "Picnic on the Plaza" and this event are the city of Douglasville and the Cultural Arts Council (CAC) of Douglasville/Douglas County.
Samples will be available for purchase from many of the community’s restaurants, including established favorites like Gumbeaux, Irish Bred Pub, Fabiano’s, The Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Cold Stone Creamery and Moe’s Southwestern Grill, as well as newcomers to Douglas County like Landmark Café, Lil Mama’s Soul Food and Three Dollar Café. Participating restaurants compete for Best Presentation, Most Sold and Best New Restaurant awards.
In the sold-out arts and crafts vendor market this year, CAC satellites (such as the Douglas County Arts Guild, Sweetwater Camera Club, DC Chamber Singers, C.A.S.T. and Douglasville Poets and Writers Group) will offer displays, demonstrations and interactive activities and information about their organizations’ activities. Perennial participant Bodin’s Tropicals will be offering exotic plants; Dallas Wheless will be selling gold chain by the inch; and Arts and Crafts for the Cure will display original watercolors and beach-themed crafts to benefit the Colitis and Crohn’s Foundation’s research.
Other artisans will present many different kinds of handmade jewelry, centerpieces, paper art, marionettes, fine art photographs, turned wood bowls, homemade dog treats, hand-embroidered children’s clothes, candles and soaps, wooden toys, temporary tattoos and even a local cookbook produced by an area square dance group.
In case of rain, both the “Picnic on the Plaza” and Taste of Douglasville will be rescheduled for May 20 and May 21, respectively.
