Civil War House Torn Down

The property where the Parker House once stood on Villa Rica Highway is now the site of Hulsey Automotive Repair Shop.

It may not exist any longer, but a white, wooden house that once stood on Villa Rica Highway in Dallas was used during the Civil War.

Built before the war, the Parker House was a Union hospital during the Battle of Dallas. And remnants of the fight remained when Dallas resident Dale Loudermilk’s grandparents bought the house in 1949.

“When they bought it, there were too many ball holes in the walls and porch,” Loudermilk said.

In fact, Loudermilk found mini balls and cannonballs when she played at the home as a child. There also were bloodstains on the wood floors.

“My grandma bleached and scrubbed and couldn’t get the stains up,” Loudermilk said.

When the house was built, there was no inside bathroom, and the only running water available was from a spigot. The home had a small kitchen, a large pantry, two bedrooms, and later a bathroom and laundry room.

The outside of the home was left in its original condition but, while it was in Loudermilk’s family, a wall was removed to create a large living room/dining room combo, linoleum was put down on the floor and pine paneling was put on the walls.

Loudermilk rented out the home after she moved, and several of the renters told her the house was haunted. One renter told her he heard someone yelling for help and thought someone had run off the road.

“He started following the sound in the house, and right in the center of the house was where the sound was coming from,” Loudermilk said.

The renter said he thought the sound was from the ghost of a Civil War soldier who was having a limb amputated. However, no bones were ever found in the house.

According to a post on Paulding Roots, the last owner of the house let someone tear it down to use the lumber to build a barn. That former Parker House property is now the site of Hulsey Automotive Repair Shop.
