An estimated 250 underprivileged children took home Christmas gifts from the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office's 15th-annual Cops for Kids Christmas shopping event Saturday.
Held at the Dallas Walmart, participants—typically children ages 9 to 12, many of whom are on free or reduced breakfast and lunch at their schools—were allowed to spend $150 as they shopped in the morning with a member of area law enforcement agencies.
Though many children were able to take home some of their desired Christmas gifts, event organizers say they had to turn down families who applied for assistance after the nonprofit had already reached this year’s capacity weeks before Saturday’s shopping day. The campaign also was affected by lower donations this year.
