Elementary School’s Fate Could Be Decided Tonight
Paulding School Board members could vote to close P.B. Ritch Elementary, effective the end of this school year.
Parents and students tonight could learn if the 2011-2012 school year will be the last one for P.B. Ritch Elementary.
On the Paulding County School Board’s agenda tonight is a vote regarding the phase-out of P.B. Ritch. Board members back in April voted to put the school’s phase-out on the district’s five-year facilities plan, but the vote did not put a definitive time on closing the school. District officials during a public hearing last month revealed that they would seek board approval on a plan to close the school at the conclusion of this school year.
Depending on the district’s course of action, P.B. Ritch students could be sent next year to Baggett, Dugan and/or Hal Hutchens elementary schools—officials last month said those schools could be set to take in P.B. Ritch students once the school closes.
Associate Superintendent Brian Otott during the public hearing said a plan to redistrict in the wake of the school’s closing would be similar to the process the district is currently undertaking dealing with the middle school level due to a ninth middle school opening this fall. District officials will host a public hearing on the latest middle school redistricting developments Thursday at 7 p.m. at East Paulding High.
Board members also will do a bit of annual housekeeping during tonight’s meeting, as they will elect a board chairman and vice chairman for the year. The board is then slated to select a board attorney—Tom Cable currently serves in that role.
The Paulding County School Board meets at 6:15 p.m. in the central office boardroom.
