One of four Republicans will face a Libertarian in a Jan. 8 special election to determine the next state senator whose district covers part of Paulding County.

Qualifying for the special primary election to determine the Republican candidate for Senate District 30 ended Friday with the field unchanged from Thursday. Four men will be in the GOP race: Mike Dugan, a general contractor from Carrollton; Bill Hembree, who resigned from his reelection bid in House District 67 to pursue the Senate seat; Carrollton business consultant James Naughton; and attorney Glenn Richardson of Hiram, the former State House speaker who resigned in 2010 following a suicide attempt and the revelation by his wife that he had an affair with a Capitol lobbyist.

The special election is being held after Bill Hamrick, the Carrollton Republican who represented the district, was tapped by Gov. Nathan Deal to serve as superior court judge on the Coweta Judicial Circuit.

The Nov. 6 special election, and a Dec. 4 runoff if needed, will determine the candidate who will face Libertarian James Camp of Temple, an information technology worker, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Friday. Camp was the sole independent candidate to qualify for the Jan. 8 special election over the senate seat, which will pit him against the Republican nominee.

District 30 covers a southern portion of Paulding County, most of Carroll County and a western portion of Douglas County. Residents must be qualified to vote by Oct. 8 to be eligible to vote in the Nov. 6 special election—being held the same day as this year’s general election. Residents will have to be registered to vote by Dec. 10 to vote in the Jan. 8 special election.

Another Nov. 6 election—this one a part of the general election—was impacted by Hembree’s resignation. State GOP leaders last week named Paulding resident Micah Gravley as their replacement candidate for Hembree.

Gravley will face Leigh Mcmutry, a Democrat from Winston, in the general election. Hembree and Mcmutry were unopposed in the July primary.
