High Temps Lead Paulding to Postpone Practices

Outdoor student activities won't be allowed to begin until 6 p.m. today and Thursday.

Athletes and band members practicing for their fall seasons won't be subjected to the extreme heat of mid-afternoon today or Thursday.

David Colvard, executive director of Safety and Athletics for Paulding County Schools, announced that the district is requiring today and Thursday that outdoor activities be moved to no earlier than 6 p.m.

The National Weather Service at midday said we can expect the mercury to peak just under the 100-degree mark today, along with heat index values as high as 106. Thursday's forecast calls for a high near 96 and heat indices as high as 104.

Other school districts are implementing similar measures. The Cobb County School District has canceled all outdoor activities from noon to 6 p.m. daily until further notice.

Cherokee County Schools also have moved outdoor activities out of the noon-to-6 window today. The district recently had some of its schools featured in a Weather Channel report on what schools are doing to protect students from the heat.

Hot enough for ya? Tell us in the comments.

Regina, I would like to know how parents feel about returning to the old days of starting after Labor Day.

One good thing I could see with starting school this early is that maybe some of the underprivileged kids are now getting to spend most of their day in air conditioning? (I'm just thinking it's not a luxury everyone has even today.) They're also able to get one or two full meals at school.

They are still going the same number of days, just more breaks in there. Personally I think starting later and eliminating some of the breaks would be a good thing. But there are many that don't agree. :)

I think this is a smart move on the part of the BOE. Although it really doesn't cool off til the sun sets.

I would love to take those responsible in the Paulding County School District for this early August schedule and put them three to seat on an unconditioned school bus for an hour plus. It's the same punishment my new Highschooler will be getting today. Maybe they would put more thought into what they are doing to these children.
