UPDATED: Man Surrenders to Paulding SWAT Team After Standoff
The Paulding County Sheriff's Office responded to the south Dallas home after the suspect's father fled to a nearby fire station with stab wounds.
A Paulding County man surrendered to deputies and SWAT officers after a standoff that lasted several hours at a Marshall Fuller Road home in south Dallas.
Captain Bobby Godsey of the Paulding County Sheriff's Office said deputies and the SWAT team were called to a Brooke Drive residence of Marshall Fuller Road at 9:58 a.m.
The man's father fled the home with stab wounds, finding safety at a nearby fire station before being taken to Floyd Medical Center, wsbtv.com reported today. After surrendering, the suspect also was taken there to treat a wound on his hand, Godsey told Dallas-Hiram Patch.
"We received a 911 call from other family members stating that an altercation had occurred where the victim had got stabbed," Captain Godsey said. "On our arrival, we learned that the victim had fled the residence in his vehicle and the suspect then retreated back into the house where he barricaded himself in where the incident occurred.
Negotiators stayed in contact with the suspect for two hours. The Sheriff's Office spokesman said they knew the suspect was mentally ill, so it was going to take some time with him to resolve the situation.
"The negotiators just stayed on the phone with him. They stayed in constant contact with him and was able to get him to come out of the house and turn himself in," Godsey said.
Sheriff's officials knew the suspect was armed with a knife, but were told a firearm in the house was locked up.
Godsey said, "he had no access to it and that there was no ammunition in the house. We didn't really know that for sure."
The Sheriff's Office asked to shut down the subdivision to stop traffic while they handled the operation.
The subdivision on Brooke Drive is an older subdivision, he said.
"We don't respond to a lot of calls in the area. It's a pretty quiet neighborhood," Godsey, said, adding that most of it seemed to be kept in good condition.
The suspect was going to be charged with aggravated assault upon his release from Floyd Medical Center, he said.
