Mark Your Calendar: School Year Nears
Need to know the important dates for Paulding County Schools' 2012-2013 school year? Dallas-Hiram Patch is here to help.
When does the school year start in Paulding County? If you answered with any form of “very soon,” you’d be correct.
Paulding County Schools’ 2012-2013 school year begins Wednesday. The school calendar was initially approved in February and amended in May, which brought it more in line with the calendar used in the 2011-2012 school year.
The 178-day calendar includes a weeklong fall break the last full week of September, a weeklong Thanksgiving break, and the first semester’s end on Thursday, Dec. 20.
Students will return to classes on Jan. 7, 2013.
The second semester includes a winter break Feb. 18-22, while spring break runs April 8-12. Students’ last day will be May 24, with the district’s five high schools holding graduations either on that day or Saturday, depending on how officials schedule them.
Do you think the school year is starting too early? What breaks in the school year are you most excited about? Share your thoughts on the calendar in the comments.

August 1st is too early. Our kids don't get a full summer. Omit the Sept & Feb breaks & let them start later.

I agree with you Pam, this is way to early to be going back to school!

Pam and Cat, I've heard those arguments before a few years ago in a different school system, but surprisingly, I don't believe I heard anyone rally against Paulding's calendar when it came up for a vote this year. Did the fall and winter breaks win more parents over?
I definitely see arguments for both sides (longer summer vs. shorter one with weeklong breaks during the year). Luckily, I don't have to take a side yet since I have no kids.

My last one graduated in May, but I moved from Cobb to Paulding BECAUSE of the week long breaks! They allowed a week long break for TG in 2004 and then did a poll on the school website. Over 90% of the teachers wanted it, and 85% of the parents wanted it, but the Cobb School Board took it away the next year. In 2010 they asked again and Cobb wanted more breaks in the school year. They started and finished the same time we did, but the next year the Cobb school board took it away "again" to the displeasure of many Cobb parents!
I applaud the school board for allowing the breaks. I have 4 cousins that are Paulding teachers and they LOVE the breaks! It gives everyone's mind a breather and hopefully keeps learning fresh! Plus getting out before Memorial day allows for early summer vacation deals!
Keep things the way they are!
