Mayor's Race Set, Chamber's Awards, Crime News

As a new week begins, take a few minutes to recap our top headlines from last week, Jan. 22-29.

 

Our top headlines last week spanned the crime, government and business beats.

In some late-week crime news, bond was set for a mother and her daughter facing felony murder charges over a May 30 death, while a judge rejected an appeal for a man on death row over the 2001 killings of a mother and her 3-year-old daughter; Nicholas Cody Tate as of late Monday afternoon remained set for a Tuesday execution.

In politics, Hiram voters now know the two individuals who will be seeking the mayor’s seat in a March 6 election. And Patch readers continue to comment about President Barack Obama’s State of the Union speech.

The P.B. Ritch name will move from one school to another after actions taken by Paulding County School Board members Tuesday. Also Tuesday, county commissioners took another step toward a desired reservoir.

The Paulding County Chamber of Commerce bestowed three annual awards on locals at its annual dinner Thursday. Watch our videos of who took home the Ambassador of the Year, Business of the Year and Citizen of the Year honors.

Speaking of commerce and business, we learned last week that Paulding gained jobs to end 2011, according to initial Georgia Department of Labor figures. Other job-related offerings on our site included Wednesday’s live chat on “Surviving a Layoff” put on by the GDOL, and coverage of a panel on workforce development Thursday at Chattahoochee Technical College.

On the housing front, our weekly House Hunt feature focused on open houses and million-dollar homes, while the latest article from iDeal Real Estate Professionals took a look at a legislator’s proposal to change Georgia mortgage laws.

In our weekly features, the latest food scores showed that three of 20 restaurants graded earned unsatisfactory marks, The Grey was the focus of “Movie,” and our resident video game reviewer took at look at some iPhone games you may have missed.
