Dozens of teams from across the country will descend on Paulding County this weekend to take part in the 2011 Georgia Military Softball Championship. Find out more about this event in our video feature.
The event will see more than 50 teams—men’s, women’s and co-ed—hitting the field Saturday and Sunday. The majority of the action will be at Mount Tabor Park on East Paulding Drive off Ga. 92 in Dallas, though the sheer number of entering teams has led organizers to schedule some of the games at Taylor Farm Park in Powder Springs.
Bats will swing and balls will fly the evening before the weekend’s games, however, as two home run derbies are set for Friday at 7 p.m. at Mount Tabor. The winner of each contest—one for military and the other for civilians—will receive a bat.
The weekend officially gets under way when opening ceremonies take place at 8 a.m. Saturday in the Victory Garden at Mount Tabor, with the event’s opening including a wreath-laying ceremony to remember the lost and missing members of the U.S. armed forces. Attendees will see a jump from the Ft. Benning Silver Wings parachute team, the singing of the National Anthem, a flyover and more before the first teams take the field at 10 a.m.
Muscle Milk is the presenting sponsor and is behind a guest appearance by Dan Uggla of the Atlanta Braves. Many other national brands will be coming to Mount Tabor Park for the tournament; dozens of vendors also will be set up at the event.
Tournament organizers will hold Saturday night an event at Stars and Strikes at Ga. 92 and 120, where tournament participants will have the chance to unwind. Residents also are invited to stop by and welcome them.
