Despite sustaining some damage during the severe weather Friday night and early Saturday, Poole Elementary in Dallas will host classes Monday with only minor changes to school operations.

“We’re going to have a typical school day,” said Brian Otott, associate superintendent of Paulding County Schools. “There will be no change as far as breakfast, lunch, after school [program] … the only difference is the wing that was damaged in the storm will not be in use, and we’re relocating those classrooms to other empty, available classrooms in the building.

“Unless we get information that there are areas that they can’t ride, which we do not have to date, bus pick-up times, drop-off, everything will be the same.”

The strong storms at the start of the weekend ripped off an estimated 60 percent of the roof of one wing of the school. Several windows were broken and six or seven classrooms sustained mainly water damage due to rains that followed the strong winds. Six mobile units, which are not being used as classrooms, were overturned by the winds.

Otott at midday Sunday said fourth- and fifth-grade teachers whose rooms were affected by storm damage were currently working to identify their rooms’ contents, salvaging materials and setting up their new classrooms elsewhere in the building.

Those interested in donating materials or services to the school should first contact Paulding County Schools’ central office or officials at Poole Elementary.

The school wasn’t the only building to sustain damage in the severe weather. Homes and churches were among the buildings ravaged by the weather, while the Paulding Northwest Atlanta Airport will be closed indefinitely after storms damaged the terminal building and a hangar.

The closure of the airport was its latest setback as an under-construction hangar collapsed last month, killing one construction worker and injuring another.
