Sen. Heath: Saluting America’s Heroes

Senator Bill Heath salutes America's heroes.

Dear editor: On May 27, 2013, Americans across the nation will pause to remember the countless men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice to defend our nation. To many, Memorial Day only represents a day off work and is celebrated as the official start of summer. But it is important to remember that Memorial Day has a meaning much deeper than barbeque cookouts and spending time at the pool. Memorial Day celebrates our American heritage by remembering those who sacrificed their very lives to preserve the freedoms that we enjoy today. On this final Monday in May, Americans will gather together to honor America’s fallen heroes at cemeteries around the country where buglers can be heard playing taps, a solemn song of remembrance for …

Rep. Graves Honors Fallen Service Members, Calls for Improved Veterans Services

U.S. Rep. Tom Graves issued a statement ahead of Memorial Day 2013.

U.S. Rep. Tom Graves (R-GA-14) issued the following statement ahead of Memorial Day 2013: “The heroism of our service members plays a defining role in our history, especially through the last dozen years of war. So many of our sons and daughters have given all. Because of their sacrifice, all the hopes and dreams of a free society are able to live on. As we pause to preserve the fallen in our memories and in our hearts, we must also express gratitude to their families, to whom we owe a debt that cannot be repaid. “This day of remembrance comes at a time when many thousands veterans have survived war, only to be forgotten at home. We can further honor the fallen by treating those they served beside—our veterans—with the dignity and respect …

Why Aren’t Our Kids Graduating?

More than 30 percent of Georgia high school students aren’t graduating in four years. What do you think is keeping these students from earning their diploma?

A diploma remained out of reach for more than 30 percent of Georgia students in the class of 2012. That’s according to numbers released this week by the Georgia Department of Education. It reported that across the state, 69.7 percent of students in the class of 2012 graduated within four years. Three area school districts were among those that surpassed the state average. Cobb County Schools saw an even 76 percent of its class of 2012 graduate on time. Paulding County Schools were just behind with 75.5 percent graduating, while Douglas County had 72.3 percent earning diplomas on schedule. Other districts in Georgia didn’t fare as well. Sen. Heath: Second Amendment Rights Under Fire

In this column, Senator Bill Heath explains why he thinks your Second Amendment rights are under fire and why the right to bear arms is so important.

Dear editor: The Second Amendment to the Constitution has come under direct fire recently by anti-Second Amendment activists at both the state and national level. Sadly, much of this debate is erroneously grounded in emotionalism and devoid of empirical data and historical facts. Anti-gun opponents continue to deride pro-Second Amendment policies and supporters, while Americans across the nation are rallying to maintain their right to bear arms. With the federal government continuing to take aim at this inherent constitutional right, it is time to have an honest conversation about the future of Second Amendment rights in America. The first shot fired by Patriots during the American Revolutionary War was known as “the shot heard round the …

Yahoo! News reported that former IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman denied that the IRS targeted conservative groups when asked by Rep. Tom Graves (R-GA-14) during an Appropriations subcommittee hearing on March 21, 2012. However, ABC News reports that “senior IRS officials in Washington” were aware of the targeting of conservative groups in August 2011—months before Shulman denied the activity under questioning from Graves. “I want to know if former IRS Commissioner Shulman lied to me and our committee,” said Graves. “The report today that senior IRS officials in Washington knew about the targeting of conservative groups over seven months before our subcommittee hearing raises serious questions about the truthfulness of the former …
