Abney Elementary to Honor Veterans

On Monday, November 11, at 9 a.m., W.C. Abney Elementary School in Dallas will present its 2nd annual Veterans Day Concert.

More than 900 students will fill the school’s gymnasium with the sounds of patriotic songs dedicated to their veteran family members. Guided by the school’s two music teachers, the students have practiced their tunes since the beginning of the school year, including the national anthem and the service songs for each of the U.S. Armed Forces.

At last year’s inaugural event, the school experienced an overwhelming turnout as several hundred visitors packed the gymnasium to standing room only for a very emotional and reverent performance. Attending veterans across several generations were asked to stand when their service song was sung – a simple tribute to honor the sacrifices made by servicemen and women of the past and present. After the concert, veterans joined their
student family members for refreshments as well as to view the art displays and decorations hung throughout the school by the classes. Because of this inspiring and enjoyable experience, school administrators decided to make this an annual event.

W. C. Abney Elementary School (Abney) is one of 19 elementary schools in Paulding County. The original Abney was founded in 1954, and the school moved to its current location in 2010. The school boasts strong parent and community involvement, and is the only school in Paulding County to have 100 percent PTA membership. Scott Brock has been Abney’s Principal since 2012.
