Marietta Is Way to Blast into Past This Weekend

This week's Great Escape views two entertainment events occurring in nearby Marietta—Chubby Checker doing "The Twist" from the 1960s and a musical revue from that same time era.

Your teens are holding a car wash at the high school Saturday. The grandparents volunteered to take the younger children to a movie Sunday afternoon. Your tweens take tap on Wednesday evening. It’s your time. Take it.

Each week, we’ll tell you about great ideas to give you a much-deserved break and make your life a little easier—maybe a whole lot easier.

Chubby Checker, one of the most notable performers of the 1960s, will twist his way into Marietta on Saturday. His 8 p.m. show will be at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre, Cobb Civic Center, 548 South Marietta Parkway at Fairground Street.

Over four decades, Checker has released more than 20 hit songs that appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 music chart.

"Leader of the Pack" & Saturday Hop

The Atlanta Lyric Theatre will hold "Leader of the Pack" performances on Saturday and Sunday at The Strand on the Marietta Square. An extra event has been planned for Saturday night after the performance from 9 p.m. until midnight—the Saturday Hop.

Live music and dancing, cocktails and hors d’oeuvre's will help make the evening sparkle as guests mingle with the cast and artistic staff of "Leader of the Pack." The fundraising event for the Atlanta Lyric Theatre will be held two blocks from The Strand at The Brickyard at Marietta Station, 129 Church St.

Saturday Hop tickets are $40 but $500 for a reserved table for eight. For tickets and information, call 404-377-9948 or visit AtlantaLyricTheatre.com

Lasting 90 minutes with no intermission, "Leader of the Pack" will be presented this week at:

  • 8 p.m. Thursday
  • 8 p.m. Friday
  • 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday
  • 2 p.m. Sunday

Tickets are $27.50 through $48.70. These prices include 6-percent sales tax and a $1 Strand Theatre restoration fee.

This hit Broadway musical revue celebrates the life and times of Ellie Greenwich, whose doo-wop sounds skyrocketed to the top of the 60s charts. The story of Ellie's rise to fame and fortune is punctuated with the virtual Hit Parade of her music: "Chapel of Love," "Da Do Ron Ron," "Be My Baby," "Hanky Panky," Do Wah Diddy," "And Then He Kissed Me," “River Deep, Mountain High” and, of course, the title song.

In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the 500 greatest songs of all time included six by Ellie and her husband and writing partner, Jeff Barry—more than by any other songwriting team. A member of the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, Ellie Greenwich, who died in 2009, saw her songs earn more than 25 gold and platinum records, sales in the tens of millions and 33 BMI Awards.

In its 30th season, Atlanta Lyric Theatre is Atlanta’s only local professional musical theater company. In 1980, Atlanta Lyric Theatre was formed by Tedi and Robert Langdon and Sally Knap as the Southeastern Savoyards, a repertory theatre company dedicated to presenting the works of Gilbert and Sullivan.
