New Internal Medicine Clinic Opens in Dallas

CobbWest Clinic is bucking the trend of vanishing small clinics and serving local populations.

In an era of uncertainty in the healthcare industry, at a time when many doctors are trending toward “boutique medicine,” a new Internal Medicine and Primary Care clinic opened this week to serve the growing populations of Cobb, Paulding and Douglas Counties with an independent, family-run, family-friendly business offering patients preventative care.

CobbWest Internal Medicine Associates, based in Dallas, specializes in Internal Medicine, with a focus of working with people suffering from manageable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, COPD and heart disease, as well as preventive health strategies.

Founder Dr. Kwame Fiakpornoo (called “Dr. Kwame” by his patients), opened the clinic in an area that has nearly 1/3 the number of internal medicine doctors to the population than the national average. And as the growth trajectory in the area is expected to climb, there will be fewer and fewer available doctors to serve this growing population.

These statistics, plus the growing numbers of cases of diabetes in Douglas, Cobb, and Paulding counties (Georgia is noted as the nation’s “Diabetes Belt”), led Dr. Kwame to the decision to open in Dallas. In fact, he has a personal passion for the prevention, detection and treatment of diabetes, which has affected his own family.

CobbWest is opening its doors specifically to develop close personal relationships with its patients at a time when medicine is getting more impersonal, when smaller clinics are looking to join larger practices for cost savings, and when clinics are looking to free themselves from some of the rigorous insurance paperwork. Dr. Kwame’s CobbWest Internal Medicine clinic accepts all major plans and more, will offer competitive rates for uninsured patients, and is looking at other ways to assist patients as the AHA kicks in in January of 2014.

“With the affordable Health Care Act coming into full usage next year, it is unknown how family doctors’ practices will change,” according to Dr. Kwame.  “Coming from a family of internists, we believe that having a new clinic run by my wife and I can grow with our patients in a changing healthcare landscape. This should become a great benefit for the Atlanta area.”

Dr. Kwame Fiakpornoo is Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He trained in his native Ghana, in Vienna, Austria, and in Brooklyn, NY. He has practiced in multiple Acute Care settings, particularly at Redmond Regional Medical Center in Rome, GA.

CobbWest is located at Lost Mountain Professional Center, 2713 Charles Hardy Parkway, Suite 223 Dallas, 678-324-7021.
