No Delays, Closings for Local Schools Today

Here are five things you need to know on this cold Thursday.

(Updated 6:20 a.m.)

1. Despite last night’s snow that may have painted area lawns white, students and staff at Paulding County Schools will come to classes at normal hours today. Colleges also will open at normal times.

Paulding Schools Assistant Superintendent Brian Otott just after 5:15 a.m. told Dallas-Hiram Patch that the district is not enacting today any delays nor closing facilities.

Though the winter weather of the last few hours is not having a major impact on school operations today, pupils and educators will feel later this month the effects of the county’s last good snow. Teachers and learners are set to be in their classrooms the entire week of Feb. 21—previously the district’s winter break— that were canceled due to snow and the lingering ice.  A March 11 school holiday also is being used as a make-up day to recover class time lost due to an inclement weather day in December.

Students at two colleges with local presences, Chattahoochee Tech and Georgia Highlands, also will report to classes at regularly scheduled times.

2. Last night’s snow flurries won’t be joined by any additional flakes when the sun starts shining on Paulding County.

According to the National Weather Service, residents could see a little additional light snow before 7 a.m., but not enough to total more than one-half of an inch.

While no more snow is in today’s forecast, it will remain cold and windy. The day’s high near 40 degrees will be paired with a north wind between 10 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Tonight’s low temperature is expected to be in the low 20s, with that north wind slowing to 5-10 mph and eventually becoming calm.

3. Paulding County in April will get new representation to the State Transportation Board. Jeff Lewis on Wednesday to represent the 11th Congressional District, unseating David Doss of Rome, who had sought a third term on the board.
