This observance also will begin at noon Thursday on the Downtown Dallas Historic Square on Main Street.

The will host "this time of prayer, worship and fellowship," including light refreshments.

An annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, the National Day of Prayer involves people of all faiths to pray for the nation, according to Joni Eareckson Tada, this year's honorary chairman.

History of the Observance

The National Day of Prayer was created in 1952, by a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.

A privately funded organization, the National Day of Prayer Task Force not only encourages participation in the National Day of Prayer but also exists to communicate "the need for personal repentance and prayer, to create appropriate materials and to mobilize the Christian community to intercede for America’s leaders and its families."

The Task Force "represents a Judeo Christian expression of the national observance based on our understanding that this country was birthed in prayer and in reverence for the God of the Bible" according to the National Day of Prayer website.
