Travel Back in Time, Help Local Cause

An advocacy group encourages the community to help out while having fun.

Grab your platform shoes or poodle skirts and travel back to your favorite decade with the Family Alliance of Paulding at their Annual Dinner and Dance at Che’ne Rouge in Hiram on March 19.

The night’s theme is a Decades Dance with DJ Doug playing hits from past decades. The night’s event will include catering provided by in Hiram. Guests can also take part in the silent and live auctions and raffles throughout the evening.

Proceeds from the Family Alliance of Paulding’s Annual Dinner and Dance will go toward funding the programs that assist at-risk families in Paulding County. The organization's goal is to expand services, which will include a resource center for all families.

The group also plans to use funds raised from this event to help enhance drug and alcohol prevention, including marijuana and prescription medications. According to founder Linda Verscharen, marijuana is the number-one, most-abused illegal drug by teens, while prescription medication has become the most-abused drug across all age groups.

“These are just two of a number of initiatives in the planning stages by the Family Alliance,” Verscharen said.

The Family Alliance of Paulding was founded in 2009 after realizing a need to support the families and children affected by the drug epidemic in the community. They were originally the Meth Alliance of Paulding, but saw a need to build a supportive network for the families affected. The group also opened its Welcome Home center the same year to provide a safe alternative for bringing families back together that had been separated due to drug abuse and neglect.

“The Family Alliance of Paulding is here for all families," Verscharen said. “Everyone needs a helping hand now and again, and we provide support services for at-risk families and volunteer opportunities for people who want to share their blessings.”
