E-Book of the Week: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

Librarian Lindy A. Moore recommends "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children," by author Ransom Riggs, as this week's downloadable e-book.

For 16 year old Jacob, life as he knows it is shattered after tragedy strikes in the opening chapter. Gone is his normal, boring life.  Stories from his grandfather's childhood  and a cryptic message take Jacob to a mysterious island off the coast of Wales.  What he discovers there are the ruins of a home for children, where his grandfather was sent during the war. Why were children these children sent away-was it protection for them or for us? What other mysteries surround this forgotten island?

A mix of first-person narrative and haunting vintage photographs, this mysterious fantasy novel will sure to please adults and teens. I found this to be another wonderful addition to the newly developing category of teen books written for adults. If you enjoy plot twists and interesting characters, then you should check this one out. Peculiar it is, but a very good read.

What the heck is an E-Book and who can download them?

The West Georgia Regional Library System, which includes Douglas, Paulding, Carroll, Haralson, and Heard Counties, launched the 3M Cloud Library e-book system in October 2012. Any library patron with a valid PINES Library card from any branch of the West Georgia Regional Library System may check out an e-book. E-books may be downloaded to computers, iPhones, iPads, iPods, and Android devices, as well as dedicated e-readers such as Nooks, Kobos, and Kindle Fires. Simply log on to our website http://wgrl.net/e-books/, and follow the quick start instructions. It is that simple! E-books check out for two weeks at a time and are renewable if not on hold.  Only one e-book may be checked out at a time, per card. Books may be returned early.

After two weeks, books will automatically disappear from your device so you will never have a late fee from an e-book! Please see your local branch for more information. Valid library card and PIN required for access.

Our collection is growing every month, so be sure to come back often to see the many wonderful books that we have available http://ebook.3m.com/library/WestGeorgiaRegLib/.

I am torn on this decision. Even though homosexuality is a sin, it is no greater a sin than lyingRead More or cheating. If the troop had boys who were not Christian & they were committing those sins then that sin was being brought into the church. I think Christians need to remember that no one sin is greater than another. I think the parents of the boy scouts would have to determine if they wanted their child to participate in the troop if their was a homosexual in their group. However, the church hosted the Boy Scouts upon a certain charter. When that charter was changed then the church has the right to decide if they want to continue the association. I know of other churches that ended their hosting of Boy Scouts last year because the group was becoming too politically polarizing & they felt that conflicted with the ministry of the church. It is a fine line with views on both sides but I feel each church has to decide what is best for them...it is after all their facilities.

Do we not remember who Jesus surrounded himself with? Don't believe for one minute that there is notRead More one homosexual in your congregation, or for that matter an adulterer, a fornicator, a thief, a liar, the list goes on. And if you are a real stickler, any divorcee that has dated or remarried is committing sin every day. I do not believe in the gay lifestyle but I do believe in what good the boy scouts do. Shame on you for abandoning them when they need you the most
