Taking place in New York City in 1922, Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of young Millie Dillmount, searching for a new life in a city full of intrigue and jazz. During the 1920s, women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behavior were changing.

Based on the popular movie from 1967, starring Julie Andrews, Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Channing, the stage version of Thoroughly Modern Millie includes a full score of new songs and bright dance numbers. The music is by Jeanine Tesori with lyrics by Dick Scanlan; the book was written by Richard Henry Morris.

Atlanta Lyric Theatre, Atlanta’s only local professional musical theater company, was formed in 1980 by Tedi and Robert Langdon and Sally Knap. Then they called their repertory theatre company the Southeastern Savoyards, presenting the works of Gilbert and Sullivan.

The company’s first production, Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado, was performed at Emory University in December 1980. Later, the company’s productions were moved to the Marist School, the 14th Street Playhouse and Center Stage Theater. Then for 17 seasons, the company settled in at the Robert Ferst Center for the Arts on the campus of Georgia Tech until moving to the Strand Theatre on the Marietta Square.
