Buffalo's Cafe in Hiram is one of the company's southeastern restaurants teaming up to fight cancer.
After surpassing all goals in 2010, Buffalo’s is pairing with the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University for the second-annual Fight Takes Flight campaign.
During the month of October, Buffalo’s is serving pink chips with its Queso Verde Cheese Dip and Fire Roasted Tomato Salsa appetizers. For each appetizer purchased, $1 of the sale will be donated to Winship Cancer Institute.
Restaurant staff also offer guests a coloring sheet explaining the campaign with an additional opportunity to donate. These coloring sheets are then hung around the restaurant.
Purposely held in October in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the campaign raised $40,000 in 2011. If Buffalo’s Café’s multiple locations reach their sales goals this year, the grand total for the three-year campaign would be $100,000 donated to cancer research.
"We at Buffalo’s Cafe are thrilled to continue our partnership with the Winship Cancer Institute. Community support last year was outstanding, and we look forward to another year of helping the incredible work of the Winship Cancer Institute," COO Shaun Curtis said in a release. "Employees and restaurant guests shared their personal stories of struggle with cancer and were happy to involve themselves in raising money and awareness for the cause."
The "fun-raiser" was created to honor the Buffalo’s Cafe staff and family members of those who have fearlessly battled with cancer.
Susan Gehman, a bartender at Buffalo’s Griffin, was one of last year’s top fundraisers.
"This cause is near and dear to my heart because my mother is a breast cancer survivor," she said. "I’m proud to participate in such a great campaign because I want to support education and early detection anyway I can. I plan on selling a lot of pink chips again this year."
In Georgia alone, one in two men and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Because of this, Buffalo’s requested Winship Cancer Institute use the money where it is most needed.
Winship Cancer Institute is Georgia’s first and only National Cancer Institute designated a cancer center, and is recognized as one of the top 50 cancer centers in the United States by U.S. News and World Report. The institute serves as the coordinating center for a vast array of resources in medical, surgical, radiation oncology, diagnostic imaging and the subspecialties of cancer care throughout Emory University.
