Great Escape: Lake Ramona in Hiram Opens to First 100 for Fishing on Saturday

This private lake is open to the public once a month during the summer but only on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning at 6:30 a.m.

Your teens are holding a car wash at the high school Saturday. The grandparents volunteered to take the younger children to a movie Sunday afternoon. Your tweens take tap on Wednesday evening. It’s your time. Take it.

Each week, we’ll tell you about great ideas to give you a much-deserved break and make your life a little easier—maybe a whole lot easier.

Lake Ramona in Hiram will be open Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. for Fishing Day and a multi-family yard sale and tackle sale.

This Christian owned-and-operated property and lake also are available for rentals and special events.

Lake Ramona opened to the public on July 4, 1968, after four years of construction. The man-made lake was built by William Abner "Bill" Waters and his family. They used rebuilt and borrowed pre-WWII tractors to remove more than 100,000 board-feet of lumber to clear the land needed for the lake.

From Ga. 92 or Bill Carruth Parkway, turn left on Nebo Road and left on Waters Road. Parking is a quarter mile on your left at 141 Waters Road.

No fishing license is needed since the lake is a private, family-owned business that does not operate as a for-profit business.

Available on loan are two or three poles and one child's pole, but no lures or bait.

Also, everyone needs to bring their own life jacket.

Loads of catfish, bass and crappie are stocked in the lake.

Snapping turtles and beavers along with other wildlife (but thankfully no gators) may be seen.

No swimming or wading are allowed and no alcohol.

Another major event coming up at Lake Ramona is "Fishing for Freedom" by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) on Sept. 10.

This Outdoors Warriors and Families Appreciation Day is designed to show appreciation for 100 Wounded Warriors and their families.

  • Sponsorships are available for as low as $50.
  • Sponsorships provide free food, fishing poles, fishing tackle (they keep) and bait.
  • Space is limited to 100 attendees. To register to attend or for more information, contact Carlis Baker at 678-699-1854 or carwashdoctor@gmail.com.

"Our event is not filled with speakers and hoopla tying up their day. We simply want to say thank you and allow them to have a day at the lake with family and friends."

The Frequently Asked Questions page on Lake Ramona's website provides well-written, serious information to be heeded—but with humor—such as:

"Can I come fish whenever I want?

Unfortunately, no. For the safety of the other guests and the property, we must have a staff member present at all events. If anyone is caught fishing, hiking, exploring, etc. without clearance, you will be asked to leave and if you do not cooperate we will give you stern looks and possibly question your upbringing. We reserve the right to prosecute trespassers to the full extent of the law."

There are more rules on their Facebook page.

In conclusion:

"A family of 4 can fish for around $30 all day, and you can control how much junk food is eaten. It also can be the start of some great memories, or bring back old ones, and children can learn an appreciation for nature at a young age. Also, it's soothing to sit back and listen to the water, birds, frogs, and other wonderful creatures that call Lake Ramona home."
