Ordinary Olive Tree Disappointing

Hiram is the third location but expansion is not always successful.

Dining at local restaurants sparks enthusiasm and excitement for me; therefore, when The Olive Tree Greek and Italian Cuisine, opened in downtown Hiram (locations are also in Lithia Springs and Villa Rica), I could not wait to try it.

Being a Friday night, the parking lot was busy. Upon entering, one couple was already waiting for a table in the very small waiting area. Several couples, including a party of five,  were promptly seated, while we (my husband and I) waited 20 minutes for a table. When we were seated, three of the 16 tables were empty. During our meal, the table staff were quickly clearing tables; service was wonderful; however, it was evident the hostess was moving in slow motion seating new customers.

The menu was a bit basic. Greek offerings include gyros, moussaka and a “combo plate.” Italian dishes include lasagna, manicotti, spaghetti, pizza and parmesan entrees. The baked spaghetti and chicken parmesan were served with a watery tomato sauce. Although bland and basic, the dinners were hot and decent portions. The unsubstantial calamari appetizer was unappealing and questionably severed two minutes after ordered. The watery tomato dipping sauce accompanied the unsightly calamari. Salads accompany most entrees, however, only house and ranch dressings are free. Customers who order a Caesar salad will be charged extra.

A basic wine list is available and specialty cocktails are on the menu. If you order wine, order by the bottle. By the glass servings average $5.95 a glass and were only a half-glass portion.

The wait staff was impressive. Shannon was prompt to our needs and filled water glasses repeatedly.

Reservations are not accepted. Receipts include a presumptuous “gratuity chart.” Two entrees, one appetizer, one glass of wine and two beers totaled an unsatisfactory $50.

European renovations are evident and efficiency of the small space is adequate; however, this neighborhood restaurant is no better than an out-of-the-jar spaghetti dinner at home.
