Cobb EMC’s digging up safety awards

Thanks to six steadfast Cobb EMC employees, the electric cooperative has dug up another safety award.

The crew earned the coveted “Golden Backhoe” award for safe digging practices from the Georgia Utility Coordinating Council. The organization evaluates contenders based on the number of utility lines marked for homeowners through Georgia 811, reportable damages caused during digging and trainings, safety classes and meetings attended.

“This crew’s setting a pretty incredible example here at Cobb EMC,” said Wendell Holbrook, director of underground locate technology. “They did 400 jobs last year without a single reportable damage. And when you think beyond the safety aspect of that accomplishment…You realize that each damage can end up costing a co-op $15,000. That adds up quickly. But our team’s intent focus on safety meant we didn’t spend a dime.”
