Paulding Deputy Kills Man

He may have been involved in a home invasion in Cobb.

A Paulding County sheriff's deputy early Saturday shot and killed a 24-year-old Alabama man who authorities believed was involved in a Cobb home invasion.

A lookout was issued for the vehicle used in the home invasion on Hiram-Powder Springs Road in Cobb County, GBI spokeswoman Sherry Lang told WSB-TV.

Paulding deputies spotted the vehicle about 1 a.m. Saturday, followed it to a home on Echo Ridge Drive and approached the vehicle. That is when Corey Thomas of Mobile, Ala., ran into a wooded area, she said.

Deputies went after Thomas, who took a gun from one of the deputies during a struggle, fired the gun and missed the deputy. The other deputy shot Thomas, killing him.

Anytime there is an officer-involved shooting that involves a Paulding County deputy, the agency calls the GBI to investigate.

"The reason we call the GBI is because they are an unbiased third party," Cpl. Ashley Henson said.

Henson offered no other details about the case.

"For now," he said, "we will only echo what the GBI has released."
