A Dallas, Ga., teen who was diagnosed with epilepsy in November is in need of a trained service dog to help her find independence while living with the disease.

A GoFundMe donation site has been set up for Julia Maxwell, 16, to train and purchase a service dog. “Julia’s Journey” has set a goal of $7,000. As of Monday, more than $2,000 had been raised.

According to the GoFundMe page, the family had hoped a family dog could be trained, but that wasn’t possible. Seizure service dogs are trained to alert their owners before a seizure begins.

“I am asking all my family and friends to please share this on their page. This is very important to Julia to get her seizure service dog. This will give her more independence living with epilepsy,” posted Ellen Maxwell, who created the site on May 31.

A pancake breakfast to benefit Julia has been scheduled June 28 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Fast Eddie's Sports Cafe in Acworth, which will include a raffle and silent auction.
