MacFarlane's 'Ted' Raunchy, But Bearable

A plush teddy bear comes to life and shares some pillow talk in a vulgar and funny new film about a furry companion with a very real heart.

One way to beat the heat is to go to the movies.

A little boy gets a cuddly teddy bear for Christmas and, after making a wish, the bear begins to talk. Twenty years later, Johnny (Mark Wahlberg) and his teddy bear (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) live together as roomies who smoke pot, watch cartoons and avoid growing up in Ted.

John's longtime girlfriend, Lori (Mila Kunis), waits patiently for a proposal but something has to be done about his foul-mouthed furry sidekick. John seems genuinely torn between them, making two humans and one bear a pretty convincing dramatic triangle.

The storyline is a bit weak, even though it is funny to see a sweet-looking stuffed animal sucking down bong hits, drinking, swearing and making vulgar gyrations when he spots an attractive woman he wants to date. The movie, however, has heart. Any comedy that makes you actually feel something for a bear with a hooker habit has something going for it.

Ted is directed, written and co-starred by MacFarlane, creator of Family Guy. This is a guy movie with a pile of filthy, ethnically offensive jokes, scatological humor, tacky pop culture references and random cameos, and it begins to wear thin.

The Flick-O-Meter gives Ted three out of five. The film does have some heart but the ending seemed a bit contrived. Wait, it is about a talking teddy bear, so never mind about that. It is a bit raunchy and over the top. Ted may be best enjoyed while enjoying the same mind-altering substances ingested in the movie. After the novelty of a cussing vulgar bear wears off, though, so does the buzz.

I am torn on this decision. Even though homosexuality is a sin, it is no greater a sin than lyingRead More or cheating. If the troop had boys who were not Christian & they were committing those sins then that sin was being brought into the church. I think Christians need to remember that no one sin is greater than another. I think the parents of the boy scouts would have to determine if they wanted their child to participate in the troop if their was a homosexual in their group. However, the church hosted the Boy Scouts upon a certain charter. When that charter was changed then the church has the right to decide if they want to continue the association. I know of other churches that ended their hosting of Boy Scouts last year because the group was becoming too politically polarizing & they felt that conflicted with the ministry of the church. It is a fine line with views on both sides but I feel each church has to decide what is best for them...it is after all their facilities.

Do we not remember who Jesus surrounded himself with? Don't believe for one minute that there is notRead More one homosexual in your congregation, or for that matter an adulterer, a fornicator, a thief, a liar, the list goes on. And if you are a real stickler, any divorcee that has dated or remarried is committing sin every day. I do not believe in the gay lifestyle but I do believe in what good the boy scouts do. Shame on you for abandoning them when they need you the most
