Clean Up Begins—Airport Damaged, Roads Closed, Power Out. No Deaths.

It appears that Paulding County received the most damage in the metro area.

officials spent Saturday assessing the damage from Friday night’s storm as it appeared the county was the worst hit in the metro area.

Early Saturday Georgia EMC said 700 customers were without power, mainly in Paulding County.

Elsewhere, officials were trying to get an accurate tally on the damage to homes, churches, schools and the airport.

“We are still assessing the damage,” MaryAnn Phipps, spokesman for emergency managment told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“The power company is trying to restore power so we can begin the cleanup.”

The county is also trying to determine if shelters need to be set up for residents. One house was completely destroyed, 48 houses received moderate damage and 44 homes had minor damage.

Two churches also were damaged on Wayside Lane and Woodrow Kay Road.

At Wayside Baptist Church on Wayside Lane, the storm toppled the steeple and some of the surrounding trees.

“Right now we are urging people to stay away from the affected areas so rescue personnel and volunteers can go in there and help the situation,” a sheriff’s spokesman told Channel 2 Action News.

At , 25 percent of the roof was damaged, Phipps said. The school received structural damage and six mobile classrooms were destroyed. The playground was destroyed and two buses received damage.

A hangar at the Paulding Northwest Atlanta Airport was destroyed and 17 planes received light damage. Five planes on the runway were destroyed and there was roof and water damage to the terminal.

Debris from the storm was scattered up to a half mile around the airport.

Portions of a half dozen roads, including East Memorial Drive, Mount Olivet, Spring Road and Wayside Lane, were closed and impassable due to downed trees and power lines.
