Austell Man Facing Child Molestation, Sodomy Charges

Demetrius Ortez Jones, a convicted sex offender, was arrested by county and federal authorities Wednesday.

Update: Though it was previously reported that Demetrius Ortez Jones had been convicted of child molestation in Cobb County in August—that information was provided to Dallas-Hiram Patch by the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office—court documents obtained by Patch indicate that Jones had instead pled guilty to two counts of sexual battery of a minor. .

An Austell man convicted last year on a child molestation charge is facing more charges of a similar nature after being arrested in Hiram on Wednesday.

According to a news release, Wednesday about 2:44 p.m., deputies responded to 164 Baywood Crossing in Hiram to respond to an assault that had occurred. When deputies arrived, they discovered that a 7-year-old boy had been sexually assaulted by a 19-year-old man. Witnesses on the scene stated that Demetrius Ortez Jones sexually assaulted the boy. Witnesses said that after they confronted Jones, he fled.

Once deputies realized the nature of the incident, deputies and detectives from the division began searching the area for Jones. After they searched the area with no success, the United States Marshal’s Service Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force became involved in the search. When SERFTF agents became involved, they quickly were able to arrest Jones without incident. Jones was arrested at 6:13 p.m. in the near the railroad tracks at Angham Road, just east of the incident location.

Jones has been charged with aggravated child molestation and aggravated sodomy and is currently being held in the Paulding County Detention Center without bond. Authorities didn’t discover until later in their investigation that Jones was a convicted sex offender on the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s sex offender registry; he had been convicted Aug. 24, 2011, in Cobb County for child molestation and placed on the sex offender registry on Nov. 30, the news release stated.
