Cause of Wrong-Way Crash Still Unknown

The two drivers involved sustained injuries in the wreck that shut down Highway 278 late Tuesday and early Wednesday.

A Tuesday evening continues to be investigated by authorities as its cause remains unknown.

The wreck happened on Highway 278 near Old Harris Road when a 2005 Dodge Caravan heading eastbound was hit head-on by a Pontiac G6 traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes. Georgia State Patrol dispatch was notified of the crash by 911 operators just a few minutes before 11 p.m.

The Pontiac driver, Brooke Dyer of Dallas, was life-flighted to Atlanta Medical Center but was alive Wednesday afternoon, according to Georgia State Patrol Trooper First Class J.S. Hobbs, who spoke to Dallas-Hiram Patch.

“I talked to Hiram PD and they said she’s alive,” Hobbs said in a Wednesday afternoon interview. “They were afraid she was going to be deceased [on the scene], and [emergency responders] were about to start doing all their things because she was unresponsive, and she just woke up, opened her eyes and just started talking. That was definitely a relief for everybody.”

Hobbs said the Dodge Caravan driver, Muhammad Shahid of Hiram, sustained injuries, but none were severe. He was taken by ground to in Marietta.

“The airbag and seatbelt definitely did their job for him,” Hobbs said.

Though a reason why Dyer’s vehicle was on the wrong side of the road has yet to be determined, Hobbs said no evidence thus far has pointed to any form of intoxicated driving.

“Right now, it’s hearsay as to what’s what and who’s who, but we’re going to follow up on all our needs and then go from there. But right now, there was nothing found inside the car, no smell or odor of alcohol beverage on her, about her person or vehicle, so at this time alcohol is not a suspect in the reason why she was over there.”

is aiding in the investigation into why Dyer’s vehicle was on the wrong side of the road.
