Hiram Man Facing Charges in Fatal Crash

The crash occurred Saturday in Smyrna. A passenger involved in the two-vehicle crash died Tuesday.

Charges are being filed against the drivers in a two-vehicle crash that resulted in a juvenile’s death.

According to a news release Wednesday from the Cobb County Police Department, the crash occurred Saturday on Hurt Road at its intersection with Concord Road in Smyrna.

According to investigators, a maroon 1996 Chevrolet was southbound on Hurt Road while a silver 2007 Pontiac G5 was westbound on Concord Road. According to witnesses at the scene, the Pontiac ran a red light at the intersection and hit the driver’s side of the Chevrolet.  The impact caused the Chevrolet to roll over, coming to rest on its right side; a juvenile passenger was ejected from the vehicle upon impact.

The juvenile was transported to Atlanta Medical Center, then subsequently flown to Egleston Children’s Hospital and listed in critical condition. Investigators with Cobb Police’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program Unit were notified Tuesday that the juvenile had died as a result of the injuries.

The Pontiac’s driver, identified as 19-year-old Julian Guzman of Hiram, now faces a second-degree vehicular homicide charge, as well as the charge of failure to obey a traffic control device. Guzman and his three passengers did not claim any injuries from the collision.

Charges are also forthcoming for 35-year-old Sharone Gadsden of Atlanta, the driver of the Chevrolet, for failure to secure a minor in a seatbelt. Gadsden following the crash was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Anyone with information that may assist investigators with this case is asked to call 770-499-3987.
