Lightning Ignites Dallas Apartment Roof

(Updated 9:15 p.m.) No injures reported following fire that hit Building 10 of the Harris Bridge Overlook apartments on Old Harris Road.

An afternoon lightning strike at the in Dallas will temporarily displace two families as their units are repaired for water damage from the dousing of flames.

No one was injured by or as a result of the lightning strike to Building 10 of the apartment community, which happened about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday. Deputy Chief Joey Pelfrey of the said officials received the report of the fire at 5:25 p.m., with the first trucks arriving on the scene four minutes later. While the fire trucks were en route, residents of neighboring apartments called authorities to report seeing flames through the roof.

Once on the scene, firefighters were able to contain the fire within about 15 to 20 minutes, Pelfrey said.

“There was very minimal damage,” he said, adding that the fire was contained to the building’s attic area. “It looks like we only have two families that are displaced, and that’s mainly due to water” from the fire hoses that had leaked down into some of the apartments.

Pelfrey said Harris Bridge Overlook is putting the displaced families in spare apartments in the meantime.

Pelfrey reported that the department also responded to another lightning strike at an East Paulding Drive residence, but the home sustained “very little damage."
