Police Search for Saturday's Killer

Officers of the Dallas Police Department are searching for the man who shot and killed 41-year-old James Hendon on Saturday.

Police have the name of the murder suspect and he is described as a 21-year-old, dark-skinned black man with short hair. He's approximately 5 foot 10 inches tall and 140 pounds. But the name is not being released.

Hendon was shot at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Saturday in front of Mr. G's Convenience Store, located on Merchant's Drive in the Paulding Plaza Shopping Center, because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, according to Dallas Police Sergeant Bill Gorman. Three other men were involved in an altercation and Hendon was on his way to buy lottery tickets when he was punched in the face by the murderer and then shot dead.

"He had just walked out of the Sunshine Motel," Gorman said. "The victim didn't know any of the persons involved. There was no explanation for the killing; it just happened."

Hendon had spent time living in Paulding and Cobb counties recently, Gorman said, and leaves behind a wife and child who were also staying at the motel.

The altercation began shortly before the shooting, when an eye witness described coming out of the convenience store and seeing two men he knew arguing. One man punched the other man in the face and then the first man drew a gun.

"The witness tried to mediate," Gorman said. "He tried to get the person who was punched to leave. The person who drew the gun couldn't be reasoned with. He was acting strange."

It was at that time that Hendon rounded the corner and was punched in the face and then shot by the man with the gun.

"Then everyone ran," Gorman said.

Hendon was brought to Kennestone Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Gorman said it would be better for the suspect if he would turn himself in but Gorman doesn't expect he will.

"I'm just beside myself about what happened," he said. "I could understand if it were about jealousy or robbery but to just pick a poor man and punch him in the face and shoot him dead. It could have been anybody. It just doesn't make any sense."

If you have any information about this case, you can call Sgt. Gorman at 678-449-6713.
