Remember Safety First When Dealing with Fireworks
With the July 4 holiday weekend almost upon us, the Paulding County Fire Department offers tips for safe handling of fireworks.
With the Fourth of July just around the corner, the Paulding County Fire Department urges residents to practice safety this weekend when handling or around fireworks.
Fireworks can be a lot of fun and entertaining for spectators to watch, but when it comes to handling them, fireworks can be extremely dangerous even when precautions are used. According to Maj. Kevin New with the Paulding County Fire Department, safety is the most important thing when it comes to handling and even observing them.
Because safety is key, it’s important for those who are purchasing them for their personal use to also know what types are legal in Georgia and how to properly handle them. Georgia law allows sparklers up to 100 grams each, snakes, “glow worms,” snappers and party poppers. However, firecrackers, torpedoes, sky rockets, Roman candles, bombs and sparklers of more than 100 grams each are specifically prohibited.

“Basically, the consumer fireworks sold legally in the state of Georgia are allowed, and the county goes by state law,” New said. “The ones banned are the ones purchased out of state.”
Other important tips to remember when using fireworks are:

• Do not use in any dry weather or dry areas.
• Do not let children play with fireworks or use lighters and matches, especially unsupervised.
• Follow all manufacturers’ instructions for lighting and the proper area needed.
• Do not hold fireworks in hands.
“The most important thing is don’t let children use fireworks without adult supervision,” New said.
Residents are strongly encouraged to abide by state laws regarding fireworks to ensure their safety and the safety of those around them.
