Dallas Council Approves Annexation

Mayor Boyd Austin says he will coordinate a vote on Sunday alcohol sales with Hiram and Paulding County.

Dallas City Council members quickly approved two items on a light agenda at Monday night's meeting.

The six members present unanimously approved a compliance order regarding what was deemed a small spill of 500 gallons of sewage at .

The council also unanimously approved requests from Edgar "Gary" Wollam to annex land at 4019 Johns Road into the city and zone it C2. City Manager Kendall Smith said the city’s Planning Commission recommended the requests.

The only speaker during a public hearing on Wollam’s annexation and zoning requests at the council’s 7 p.m. business session was Guy Abernathy of Ringo Abernathy and Associates in Dacula, who said he represented Wollam.

Mayor Boyd Austin said council members at their 5 p.m. monthly work session discussed the use of a $600,000 grant from the state Department of Transportation to pave pathways at Battlefield Park. City officials hope to garner an additional $200,000 for the project from other Georgia DOT funds, the mayor said.

The plan, Austin said, is to finish the pathways before May 28, 2014, the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Dallas.

After the meeting Austin said he will work with Hiram Mayor Carmen Rollins  and Paulding County Commission Chairman David Austin to choose a date for a referendum on Sunday alcohol sales. Gov. Nathan Deal signed legislation authorizing such votes Thursday.
