Early Start for Weekend Events; Early Start for Rain?
A 5K to fight meth, military softball and reduced animal shelter hours commence today. Learn more about these and other items of interest in today's "5 Things."
1. Though residents of Paulding will have to wake up early to take in some local events in their entirety, rain—if it comes today—is set to sleep in.
According to the National Weather Service, we have a 40-percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. today. Otherwise, we’ll enjoy mostly sunny skies and a high temperature of 92, coupled with a heat index as high as 97. And flying softballs could have some extra oomph today (we’ll explain shortly) as winds of 5 to 10 mph could gust as high as 15 mph.
Tonight, a 30-percent chance of rains and T-storms remains, with the greatest chance of such weather expected before 8 p.m. Temps are expected to drop to just under 70 under partly cloudy skies.

Sunday so far is shaping up to be warmer and windier, as its forecast calls for mostly sunny skies with an expected high near 95 and a heat index of 98. And softball players may either be praising or cursing the day’s winds of 10 to 15 mph, though they could gust as high as 20 mph. When the sun goes down on Sunday, the temp should follow it down to about 68 degrees.
2. Members of the military will be behind the aforementioned flying softballs today as the 2011 Georgia Military Softball Championship opens at , with opening ceremonies set for 8 a.m. The event will see more than 50 teams—men’s, women’s and co-ed—hitting the field Saturday and Sunday. The majority of the action will be at Mount Tabor, though the sheer number of entering teams has led organizers to schedule some of the games at Taylor Farm Park in Powder Springs. .

Also getting an early start today are those involved in the , an event aimed fighting methamphetamine use and abuse in the county. The March Against Meth will be held at the Silver Comet trailhead on Seaboard Avenue in Hiram, next to . The event features a 5-kilometer walk and run as well as a 10-kilometer run and a "paws walk" for walkers and their pets. Participant fees are $20 for those 12 and under and $25 for everyone else. Registration begins at 7 a.m., with the march commencing at 8.
3. Also commencing today will be a new operating schedule for Paulding County Animal Control. More information on its shorter hours—and fewer days of operation—.
4. We’re guessing that Paulding County fielded a decent number of Chattahoochee Technical College’s last class of 1,200-plus graduates.
