Frugal Family: Invest Yourselves This Week in 'Community Makeover'

Thursday through Sunday is when this annual event—originating in Paulding—will involve thousands in performing acts of kindness throughout five Northwest Metro Atlanta counties.

We're all watching our family budgets these days. Whether shopping with coupons or looking for two-for-one deals, we're taking advantage of all sorts of offers and savings that help us stretch our dollars.

This column will be dedicated to giving you five great local deals each week that will help your family’s bottom line. Since we do the scouting for you, you can save time as well as money.

You are a big part of this column. Let us hear about the deals you've seen. Just add them to our comment box. Then come back each week and see what we've uncovered together.

Remember: You also can help military families overseas with your expired coupons through Coupon Mom's Military Coupon Program

This week is dedicated to turning our attention to many in need in our community. Here are three examples from Engage Atlanta / Community Makeover Director Paul Richardson:

  • A recently retired widow would like to have some flowerboxes built for her and needs help with landscaping.
  • A family with an ill mother needs help with painting the front porch and repairing a backdoor frame and a garage door.
  • A single woman, caring for her aging father, also has been recuperating from hip replacement surgery. She needs some people with trucks to help move items from one house to another related to the care of her dad.

If you can help this weekend, send Richardson an email at paulr@westridge.com. For other projects, please register here.

I am torn on this decision. Even though homosexuality is a sin, it is no greater a sin than lyingRead More or cheating. If the troop had boys who were not Christian & they were committing those sins then that sin was being brought into the church. I think Christians need to remember that no one sin is greater than another. I think the parents of the boy scouts would have to determine if they wanted their child to participate in the troop if their was a homosexual in their group. However, the church hosted the Boy Scouts upon a certain charter. When that charter was changed then the church has the right to decide if they want to continue the association. I know of other churches that ended their hosting of Boy Scouts last year because the group was becoming too politically polarizing & they felt that conflicted with the ministry of the church. It is a fine line with views on both sides but I feel each church has to decide what is best for them...it is after all their facilities.

Do we not remember who Jesus surrounded himself with? Don't believe for one minute that there is notRead More one homosexual in your congregation, or for that matter an adulterer, a fornicator, a thief, a liar, the list goes on. And if you are a real stickler, any divorcee that has dated or remarried is committing sin every day. I do not believe in the gay lifestyle but I do believe in what good the boy scouts do. Shame on you for abandoning them when they need you the most
