Hiram Joins Lawsuit

Hiram is one of several jurisdictions seeking excise taxes for hotel rooms booked online.

The city of Hiram is joining a class action lawsuit that could result in the city garnering more revenue in excise taxes from online travel companies.

According to the Paulding Neighbor, Hiram charges a 5 percent hotel/motel tax at its four hotels, but that tax isn't collected when rooms are booked on websites like Expedia, Orbitz or Hotels.com. A Best Western, Country Inn and Suites, Sleep Inn and Hometown Lodge are located in Hiram.

The suit, which was brought by the city Rome and Hart County, now involves several jurisdictions. A class action fairness hearing is scheduled for Aug. 16. Hiram could receive taxes for hotel rooms booked online as of May 2011.
