One person has died following a at the Paulding Northwest Atlanta Airport last week.

Airport Director Blake Swafford told Dallas-Hiram Patch that Christopher Mathis, whose address was unknown, died on Monday from injuries sustained in the collapse. A second person also was injured.

"It's sad on any project when that happens," David Austin said.

Swafford said crews had erected a third of the steel and were putting in support bracing for the new 30,000-square-foot corporate hangar when the collapse occurred last Wednesday. The hangar collapsed "pretty much all the way to the ground,” Swafford said.

Investigators from OSHA, ANS Steel and two insurance companies have been working out at the site, and the county hired a third party investigator to look into the collapse as well. It will likely be at least a month until the investigations are complete and OSHA turns the site back over to the county so construction can continue.

"The site is being thoroughly investigated, and all of our goals are to determine the cause of the collapse and hopefully to take measures so that an incident like this doesn't happen again, either in Paulding County or anywhere else."

Among the expenditures are $921,000 for preliminary engineering, $900,000 for stream bank mitigation credits and $100,000 for the request for quote and request for proposal for the final design.

“We have every reason to believe these funds will be approved,” County Administrator Mike Jones said.

The BOC is expected to approve the resolution at its meeting at 7 p.m.
