New Comer Runs for Hiram City Council

New Comer Peggy Howland throws her hat in the ring by qualifying for the Post 5 Hiram City Council seat.

Editor's note: This is a letter to the editor, written by Hiram City Council candidate Peggy Howland.

When I chose the Greystone subdivision in 2004, it was because I fell in love with the Hiram area, an area that has much to offer, but not so large that it feels impersonal and anonymous.

My background is in business management.  I managed a lumber yard and hardware store for over 20 years.  The past 4 years, I owned and operated The Book Shelter in old downtown Hiram. I think this experience will be helpful in insuring that the city is operated within its budget and in a professional manner.

There have been a few decisions that I have seen in the last few years that have made me question whether the best use is being made of the city’s resources.  One of the things that have disappointed me recently, was the decision to franchise out the trash pick-up in Hiram.  I strongly support small business and free enterprise and believe that this wasn’t the main objective in that decision.

I have never been in politics in the past and, do not have any personal  agenda, other than to try to insure that the decisions being made by Hiram City Council are being made with the best interests of all the residents of Hiram in mind.

If I should be honored to be elected to the Hiram City Council, the promise that I will make will be that I will be available to listen to any resident in regards to any of their concerns and will do my best to make good common sense decisions.  I chose the Greystone subdivision in 2004, it was because I fell in love with the Hiram area, an area that has much to offer, but not so large that it feels impersonal and anonymous.
