Roberts Elementary Reaching for New Heights in Paulding Relay For Life

There’s a lot of history behind Roberts Elementary School’s Relay For Life team. Dee Tackett, the school’s team captain, is in her 20th year of participating in Relay—18 as a team captain. Her school, meanwhile, has been involved with Relay For Life of Paulding County for almost as long.

“We began our Relay team at Roberts when the school opened, so this is our 16th year participating,” Tackett says. “Because I and other staff members had been a part of Relay at our previous schools, my then-principal asked me to bring it to Roberts.

“We have had a staff member, a student, a child of a staff member, a husband of a staff member, and several parents pass from cancer, so we are all invested in the cause—not to mention other relatives and friends of staff members who have also been affected by cancer.”

The school raises money for Relay in several ways, from Friday hat days, in which a person pays 50 cents to wear a hat; and "Comfy for a Cause" twice a year, in which a $1 donation allows the wearing of pajamas to school. There’s also a yearly school dance for Relay and an end-of-the-year Teacher Talent Show. Another fundraising avenue has the school’s PE department selling class shirts to wear on field trips and at field days—the department splits the profits with the Relay team.
