Paulding Schools See 3 Point Drop in Writing Assessment Scores
The school system also saw a slight dip in the percentage of students that met or exceeded the state standards in 2013.
Paulding County School District eighth graders who took the 2013 writing assessment did slightly worse than their predecessors in 2012, according to figures released by the Georgia Department of Education.
In 2013, 2,260 Paulding eighth graders took the writing assessment, compared to 2,162 students in 2012. 82.8 percent of 2013 test takers met or exceeded the standards set for by the state on the writing assessment, compared to an 83.6 percent rate in 2012.
The average score for Paulding County students decreased from the 214.66 mark attained in 2012. In 2013, Paulding's eighth graders scored an average of 211.89 on the writing assessment.

Students were given a persuasive or explanatory writing prompt, and expected to create a well thought out response that contains original ideas, strong organization, proper style, and adherence to conventions.
Essays that exceed standards are focused and effectively organized, with strong supporting ideas and clear sentences. Essays that meet the standard have a clear beginning, middle, and end, and may have an idea that is not related to the prompt.

In 2013, Georgia's overall meet or exceed rate was 86 percent.
