East Paulding Grad to Make MLB Debut

And he'll make that debut at Turner Field.

The New York Mets have called up pitcher and East Paulding High School graduate Zack Wheeler.

Wheeler will make his MLB debut at Turner Field as the Mets take on the Atlanta Braves at 7:10 p.m., according to MLB.com.

Wheeler grew up in Smyrna, but moved to Dallas in the eighth grade. At East Paulding, his stats earned him 2009 Gatorade High School Player of the Year for Georgia honors.

He was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the first round of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft. After a year and a half in the Giants minor league system, Wheeler was traded to the Mets on July 28, 2011.

Currently, the Mets have the third-worst record in baseball. Wheeler, who will pitch the second game of a doubleheader between the Mets and the Braves, told USA Today he hopes the team "can turn it around here soon."
