Hiram Falls to Kell, 6-3

The Hornets failed to pull off the upset.

The fell to the Kell Longhorns in region play on Friday night during Kell’s homecoming celebration.

While each team had difficulties offensively, it was clear that this was going to be a defensive contest from the beginning.Β 

Kell struck first with a field goal from its initial drive of the game. As Hiram drove the ball down the field, the Kell defense intercepted a misguided pass to give the Longhorns back the ball.Β

The Hornets, however, would not be shaken, and would get within scoring distance with 4:11 remaining in the first quarter.Β  The initial field goal attempt bounced off the left upright, but the Hornets received a second chance after the Longhorns were penalized for roughing the kicker.Β  The Hornets scored, evening up the contest at three.

In the second quarter, Cameron Harp recovered a Kell fumble for the Hornets.Β

The fourth quarter proved to be the most dramatic for both teams.Β  The Hornets blocked a 38-yard field goal attempt by the Longhorns with 6:17 remaining.Β  A high snap by the Kell center was recovered by the Hornets with 1:24 remaining and the race to the end zone was on.Β 

Hiram attempted a field goal with less than a minute remaining, but Trevor Wylie’s kick was blocked by the Kell defense to secure the win for the Longhorns.
