Hiram Has 2 Declare at Group Signing Event

Trey Wesley and Jared McClain sign letters of intent to play college football

ROSWELL—Two Hiram football stars attended a group event at Andretti Indoor Karting with 165 other Atlanta-area athletes to declare which college they would attend to play football.

Trey Wesley

While at Hiram High School, Trey Wesley was an offensive star. He rushed for over 2,000 yards in his career, while catching 61 passes for almost 900 yards. Wesley even holds several Hiram school records, including most rushing yards in a game and most receptions in a career. Ironically enough though, Wesley won't be playing running back or wide receiver at Samford, he'll be in the secondary. Wesley has no problems with changing positions,

"I want to play wherever I can that will help the team win," Wesley says, before adding, "They graduated three guys in the secondary, so I definitely have a chance to get on the field next year."

He might not have told his Samford coaches yet, but Wesley's ultimate plan is to go both ways, "They graduated a running back, so I think there's a few other options for me."

Jared McClain

For most people, a move from Atlanta to rural Kentucky is a big one. But Eastern Kentucky's newest signee Jared McClain says that's not the case for him. "Hiram is outside of Atlanta, so it's a lot like rural Kentucky," says the former Hiram quarterback. "This means EKU feels a lot like HIram, so I don't think I'll miss anything much."

Although his parents might not be to happy to hear that he won't miss too much from home, EKU coaches will be thrilled when the former Hiram quarterback gets on campus.

The Hornet signal caller threw for 1,266 yards this season while leading Hiram to the second round of the AAAA playoffs.

McClain doesn't expect to start as a freshman, but he expects to earn the starting quarterback job at some point, "The coaches want me to redshirt because they have a quarterback there now," McClain says. "So I can sit and learn the system for a year and then come in a compete for the job the year after that."
