National Signing Day 2014: Where Are Metro Atlanta's Top Prospects Headed?

Prospects like Lorenzo Carter of Norcross, Wesley Green of ML King and Elisa Shaw of Tucker are among those yet to decide.

There are nearly 1,000 names on an ajc.com list of high school football prospects who may land college scholarships on National Signing Day, Feb. 5.

Score Atlanta will host National Signing Day Frenzy at five Taco Mac locations around Atlanta to celebrate with around 100 high schools and 500 players (see more info below).

Recruiting news websites like Scout.com, Rivals.com and ESPN are feverishly updating their sites leading up to the big day and guessing where the top players will play in college. ESPN devoted an entire “Outside the Lines” show on the subject.

National Signing Day is the Super Bowl of the college football offseason, when programs look to build for the future and their fans fret over whether these kids will be good enough and how their favorite teams will stack up against the competition.

(By the way, Georgia fans, the Bulldogs’ expected 2014 class of recruits is ranked No. 8 nationally by Rivals; Georgia Tech is ranked 45th).

Many of the state’s top players — like Score Atlanta’s top-ranked Atlanta prospect, RB Nick Chubb of Cedartown (who chose Georgia) — will merely be making official the verbal commitments they’ve already made with colleges.

But there’ll be some drama, too.

Norcross defensive end Lorenzo Carter the No. 2 player on ScoreAtlanta’s list of Atlanta’s Top 25, is expected to announce his intentions at a 3 p.m. event at the high school. A panel of seven Rivals.com writers predict Carter will choose Georgia, but he also is considering Florida, Florida State and LSU.

Others in the Top 25 who were listed as undecided:

Cornerback Wesley Green of ML King High, who is said to be considering Georgia and South Carolina.

Defensive end Andrew Williams of Eagle’s Landing Christian, who’s considering Auburn, Clemson and Ole Miss.

Defensive tackle Elisha Shaw of Tucker, who has offers from Alabama, Georgia, Auburn and Florida, among others.

Athlete Myles Autry of Norcross, who has dozens of offers, but recently visited Florida State and Georgia Tech.
