No July Fourth Fireworks Planned for Paulding

Local residents can head to Douglasville, Powder Springs, Cartersville or Villa Rica to celebrate the nation's birthday.

Local residents will have to travel outside of this year to see fireworks on the Fourth of July.

Neither Paulding County nor the will host fireworks displays this year, something that Mayor Doris Devey said is due to budget constraints.

“The county had furlough days, [and] they’re not having the fireworks,” Devey said. “We didn’t have any furlough days, but we have to watch where we spend our money right now, and right now, doing the Fourth of July, as much as we want to in order for our citizens to have a place to go, right now we can’t. The council and myself were all really upset about the fact, but we have to take it and seriously look [and] do we really want to go out there and spend that kind of money when we really have to watch [what we spend]?”

There is nothing scheduled in the this year either. Mayor Boyd Austin said the city doesn’t typically hold a Fourth of July celebration. A veteran’s group tried to host an event a few years ago, but response was minimal, Austin said.

“School is out, so there are no bands to play,” the mayor said. “And, so many take vacation that week, we cannot get a good commitment of organizations and volunteers.”
