The Dallas Theater was opened in 1926 under the name of The Strand and was built by Wendell Welch. The Strand was consumed by fire in 1948. In that same year it was replaced by the new Dallas Theater.

The city of Dallas has restored its theatre to become a community arts center. The theater features state-of-the-art audio, lighting and staging, as well as 500-plus theater-style seating, including a balcony. The facility is designed for stage productions, movies, local civic events and as a public auditorium.

The theater is a member of the League of Historic American Theatres. Both the theatre and the adjacent civic center are available for rental for dance recitals, fundraisers, musical performances, weddings, ceremonies, banquets, meetings and more.
