The department's goal is to provide programs and leisure services to all county residents, ranging from youth and adult athletics, instructional classes and special events.

Another part of the department is the Senior Services Division, which has ongoing programs for residents 55 and older. Special events include arts and crafts classes, dancing and day trips. A transit program is available for those needing transportation.

Adjacent to the rec department's office is the Samuel U. Braly Sports Complex, which features a picnic pavilion, playground, a "Playground of Dreams" and 15 soccer fields, which are available for league play only through the West Metro Soccer Association.

In addition to Braly, the department oversees six other county parks.
