Should This Church Get So Much Attention?

A church known for protesting at soldiers’ funerals held Saturday a demonstration to praise a tornado that caused devastation in a college town. Tell us if you think the church is deserving of its media attention or the efforts of counter-protesters.

Wherever this church goes, controversy and attention seem to follow. The Westboro Baptist Church has long been known for picketing the funerals of American soldiers as members believe those men and women died because of homosexuality “and other sins of America,” according to one of their latest press releases. One of the latest protests put on by members of the Topeka, Kansas-based church occurred Saturday in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on the University of Alabama campus. Church members were there, according to a report from The Tuscaloosa News, to proclaim that the April 27, 2011, tornado had been the wrath of God. “God in His infinite kindness, wisdom & mercy WARNED YOU! He sent His whirlwind to Tuscaloosa … killing 36 (including 3 students), …

I'm thinking they may be more so focused toward damaging the church rather than being what they claim to be. They seem to show up, uninvited, on a regular basis, and seem to be one of the more mobile "churches" of which I am aware. In other words, they're kind of like David Dukes. Remember him, the guy who was always touted as the former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan who always carried …   more ›

Slur Published in South Paulding High School Yearbook

Susan Powell, the mother of freshman Dylan Worthen, wants the principal to confiscate the yearbooks and have them reprinted.

The last day of school in Paulding County is next Friday, and yearbooks were recently distributed at South Paulding High School. But Susan Powell, the mother of freshman Dylan Worthen, wants the principal to confiscate the yearbooks and have them reprinted, according to 11Alive. That's because the word "Freak" is next to her son's name in the caption under a marching band photo. Brian Otott, the spokesman for the school system, told 11Alive that the district is investigating the matter and intends to print a sticker that can be placed over the page. The spokesman said the district has apologized to Worthen and his family.

I'm sure I'm going to regret leaving this comment, but I have to. I will not give my name. I will not give anyone's name. Please don't ask. I know the student currently being accused of putting that word in the yearbook. I have spoken to this student - and to other students who know both the accused and Dylan - and the accused does not interact with Dylan. The accused student is not a part of the…   more ›

The 2013 Paulding County School District Teacher of the Year is Marc Pedersen of Paulding County High. The announcement was made during a May 7 luncheon at the Paulding Northwest Atlanta Airport. "Every minute that I'm in room 812," Pedersen said, "it does not feel like a job. Keeping the students engaged and keeping the students excited. That's the keyword to me. Every lesson that I have, I will step back and sort of reflect back upon that. And anytime things don't go well, I just feel like it's because the students were not engaged. That's my top priority when I come to the classroom: to get these students fired up about science." This is how the Paulding Education Foundation described Pedersen in a Facebook post: A Master Teacher is …
